The title Binge came when I realized the timeline of the piece matched thetimeline of a typical over-indulgence: The piece begins with a long period of energetic excess, treating all of the instruments as collaborative members of a groove. The snappy rhythms and punchy motives of this first section seem too savory to be healthy for consumption; surely this is irresponsible. Once satisfied with its debauchery, the music becomes calmer and warmer, featuring an extended duet for the trumpets. But the gratification cannot last, and the rest of the ensemble returns to conclude the piece with a pained and remorseful coda.
